A Study on Care Workers¡¯ Job Performance and Competency at Long-Term Care Homes

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to define what specific skills and knowledge care workers can be required to be recognized as care professionals. This paper, using 12(six are care workers and the other 6 are CEOs or employers of long-term care homes) in-depth interview cases, aimed to analyze care workers¡¯ actual job performance and competency in the fields. The results were as follows: Firstly, the majority of care workers perceive their job performance is mainly supporting daily living activity, leisure activity, and providing necessary information of health and social services. However, their actual scope of work is often enlarged towards case management, recording documents, service programme planning. Some care workers showed the positive attitudes towards the enlargement of work scope but some considered it as ¡°out of their duty¡±. The different attitudes and perceptions of care workers¡¯ job performance is related to the recognition of care professionalism. Secondly, there are three crucial elements of improving care workers¡¯ job competency. First, in terms of care knowledge, care workers need to be understood aging process, Alzheimer¡¯s dementia and other health and medical conditions of the elderly. Second, in terms of care skills, care workers can perform counselling, understanding needs, daily health care and recording documents. Third, in terms of care value professional care workers are able to empathize with the elderly users and their family. Moreover, care workers, as service providers can accept to see the elderly users as their customers. Finally, human resource development and management in long-term care homes is key to the improvement of the better quality of service.
